Sean P. Gallagher, BFA, PT, CFT, CPT
Sean started his Authentic Pilates™ training in 1986 with Romana Kryzanowska and at SUNY Purchase with Steve Giordano. From his first session Mr. Gallagher was impressed with what the method could do for the human body, mind and spirt and started to work towards helping take pilates to the main stream exercise and rehabilitation communities. In 1992 Sean had the insight to buy the trademarks for Pilates from Wei Tai Hom and started to organize Authentic Pilates™ into a professional training program. He open Authentic studio's in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and around the world to help train teachers and promote the trademarks. He copyrighted and printed the first ever manual for training and organized and instituted the Pilates Guild. All of his ideas were not only revelotionary to the pilates community but of the highest ethical standards of any exercise training in the world. Since loosing the trademarks his ideas and concepts for Pilates training have been copied around the world. He continues today to teach Authentic Pilates™ at The New York Pilates Studio ® and works with those interested in the quality of Joseph Pilates work by licensing The New York Pilates Studio ® and the Pilates Guild ® trademarks and the Sean Gallagher Pilates Archives around the world.
Sean is a graduate of Temple University where he received his BFA in Dance and BS in Physical Therapy at the
same time. He was also a student Athletic Trainer scholarship recipient for 3 years while at Temple.
Sean was recently awarded the 2008 Alumni Fellow Award from Temple Universities School of Allied Health for his many accomplishments in the field of Dance Medicine and Physical Therapy.
Sean continues to progress his understanding of the body through
training in may other forms of therapy with the goal to provide the performer with the best care. Mr. Gallagher was a modern dancer for 10 years. He is a licensed physical
therapist in 6 states and has been a leading practitioner in dance physical therapy for over 20 years.
Mr. Gallagher is also a Feldenkrais practitioner and has studied yoga
with B.K.S. Iyengar in India and acupuncture in Korea and Vietnam as well as in the United States and has studied massage in Thailand and the Philippines. He started and
developed the physical therapy programs at The Juilliard School, S.U.N.Y Purchase, The Miller Institute for Performing Artists, The Pennsylvania Ballet as well as being the first PT
to work with Modern Dance Companies (Paul Taylor, David Parsons and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago), Broadway shows and was the founder and first president of the performing arts special interest group of the Orthopedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association.
As founder and director of Performing Arts Physical Therapy, Mr. Gallagher
and his staff have provided Physical Therapy care at over 85 Broadway shows including these current shows- A Chorus Line, Hairspray, Xanadu, Mamma Mia, JUMP and Legally Blonde. With over 35 years
of dance and physical therapy experience Mr. Gallagher has also developed the most comprehensive injury prevention and self care program available to performers today. He is currently working
on his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. And is in his fourth year of training at The Canadian College of Osteopathy. Mr. Gallagher is an adjunct professor for
anatomy and pilates at the New School University and recently was gross anatomy professor at NYU's Doctoral Physical Therapy program.
He also recently finished his training as an Emergency Medical Technician - EMT and volunteers in his local ambulance service.
